Every time I turned this opal in the light, it felt like peering through a portal into another world. Little flashes of spring green, coral, electric blue, and violet appearing and disappearing like hidden landscapes.

Opals are one of the few gemstones that don’t get their color from pigment or trace minerals. Their play-of-color comes from microscopic silica spheres inside the stone that bend and scatter light, which is why no two opals ever look exactly the same. Ancient Romans believed opals contained the beauty and power of every gemstone whose colors appeared in them, and in Arabic legends, they were said to fall from the sky in flashes of lightning. Also, did you know that they can contain up to 20% water??
